To give your space an added flair, have your coatings system installer give you a custom Metallic floor. It is always a great conversation-starter, and makes your neighbors desire a custom, artistic finished flooring system for themselves.

All SPARTACOTE Metallic coating systems start with a black base coat of material. The black base coat acts as primary backdrop color from which all of the Metallic pigments bounce off of. The black base coat cures fast—typically in an hour depending upon environmental conditions.

From there, the concrete coatings installer applies the mixed Metallic pigment coat, and works the color around the surface. This is where the art in Metallic coatings comes into play. The installer will usually work the material in a figure 8 style, creating unique patterns with the Metallic pigment. After covering the floor with custom Metallic pigment swirls, the installer will add dollops of denatured alcohol from a brush to create 3-D-like craters. These tiny drops give the floor flair and depth of feel. You start to see the floor come alive with this step in the Metallic coating system.

Upon Metallic coating cure after approximately one hour, the system can be top coated with a clear polyaspartic, usually with SPARTACOTE Grip traction additive […]

Concrete to be mechanically ground with metal bond diamonds to an ICRI CSP-2 profile (equivalent of 60-80 grit sandpaper). Grinder marks should not be visible as they may telegraph through the final surface. All cracks should be repaired prior to application with SPARTACOTE® Fast-Fix™ concrete repair material.

Moisture vapor transmission in concrete should be measured prior to installation and should not exceed 3 lbs/1000 ft2 or 75% relative humidity. For higher moisture floors, a base primer coat of DRYTEK™ Moisture Vapor Barrier primer should be installed prior to system application.

Pigmenting Coatings: Disperse a 1-qt pigment pack (black) into SPARTACOTE Part A Pigment Base (short-filled). Mix pigment into part A with a slow drill mixer for approximately 2 minutes until pigment is properly dispersed. Failure to do so will result in a potentially uneven finish.

Mixing Part A with Part B: Do not mix until ready for immediate use. Elevated temperature and humidity levels will reduce product […]

SPARTACOTE® METALLIC Concrete Coatings for high-end residential condominiums

This is an exciting residential project installing SPARTACOTE® Metallic concrete coatings at the Revere House in northwest Washington D.C. This is a high profile residential condominium where a designer was contracted to renovate all common areas of the building. Expert SPARTACOTE installers Collins Concrete Coatings of Ashburn, VA, applied the polyaspartic and epoxy systems to the prepared concrete in the basement.

The project scope included a concrete stairwell leading down to the basement level where the resident’s laundry area was housed. The concrete stairs also had to be prepped in order to receive the SPARTACOTE Quartz coating system. The ‘before’ pictures illustrate the difficult conditions the Collins Team discovered: multiple layers of failed VCT, evidence of excessive moisture vapor transmission and less than ideal concrete substrate conditions. The stairs had multiple layers of failed paint and excessive cracks and fractures.

The customer wanted a metallic system in the laundry area, quartz on the stairs, a level floor surface and a rapid return to service to resume building operations. Upon consulting with SPARTACOTE subject matter expert Ben Grier and the SPARTACOTE team, Collins Concrete Coatings proposed the following coating system:

Laundry Area:
Installed Pigmented Epoxy DRYTEK™ MVB (Black) @ 80ft / gal to mitigate the moisture concern, level the substrate and act as the base coat in the metallic system.

Installed SPARTACOTE Surface Build 150 Epoxy with Gun Metal Grey Metallic pigment @ 100ft/gal to further level the concrete substrate and provide the matrix for the metallic coating.

Installed SPARTACOTE Flex PURE @ 200ft/gallon with #60 SPARTACOTE GRIP traction additive

The results were nothing less than stellar and certainly exceeded all of our expectations, most importantly the customer’s!

The installation went smoothly. There were […]
