The Dauphin Island Sea Lab is Alabama’s primary marine education and research center. It is the home site of the Marine Environmental Sciences Consortium and was founded by an act of the Alabama State Legislature in 1971.

The Sea Lab put out a public bid to renovate its cafeteria and restrooms inside Beagle Hall, including the floors. After submitting a bid, General Contractor DCD Construction, Inc., and Decorative Concrete Designs, a subsidiary of DCD Construction, was awarded the project.

Decorative Concrete Designs has been involved in decorative concrete, concrete restoration, concrete toppings and self-leveling, polished concrete, and concrete coatings for the past 17 years. The company has a great reputation in the concrete industry as well as with architects and owners in the region.

The Dauphin Island renovation project scope included the cafeteria’s entire interior: adding two bathrooms; adding four new showers; and renovating four existing restrooms with new floors, fixtures, partitions, and walls at the Beagle Hall Dormitory. Total floor renovation was 4,300 square feet.


A pre-construction evaluation of the existing slab exposed a challenge: VCT with asbestos glue. The asbestos glue would prove very difficult to remove and dispose of properly within the given six day schedule.
